A few notes:

  1. We are going to have a 10 & Under hurdles. It will be 80 meters for both boys and girls and will be at the lowest setting the hurdles will be set to. If your child would like to do this, he/she will need to run hurdles at the next two Wednesday practices.
  2. It will be a rolling schedule. First event 80 meter hurdles will go off exactly at 10am. Athletes MUST check into their races 15 minutes before they start. Registration will be at the beginning of the 100 meter dash on the west end of the track. Our estimate is the meet will last about two hours but this is flexible depending on the number of athletes in each event.
  3. There will be medals for the first place finisher in each event.
  4. Parents please help your athletes get registered and to their race on time. Track and Field meets events WILL NOT WAIT for late starters. If your child misses their event, they will receive a DNS (did not start). Listen to the announcer for 1st or 2nd call to their event and they should be down at the start line. By the 3rd call, this means their race will go off is 2-5 minutes and they may or may not miss it.
  5. There will be an adult 1500 meters as well as a mixed ages 4X100 meters dash. Cost is $5 unless you are related to a Sun City athlete and then it is free for parents/families.
  6. If your athlete is going to be competing in both a field event and a running event, check in at the field event FIRST, then listens for the running event. At SECOND call, go to the running event and let the person know who is running the field event he/she will leave run their race and then immediately return to their field event.
  7. We will not be conducting discus, javelin, steeplechase, running events longer than 1500 meters, and pole vault in the meet.
  8. Cost is $5/event for non-Sun City Athletes. Meet is open to the community.
  9. Since it is the first race for most of our team members, we will be starting each event with a whistle and not a starter’s pistol.
  10. Please register for your race/relay the week of June 1st at either the Franklin or West Valley practice. This will really help us plan on the number of athletes per event. Each athlete is allowed to compete in two track events, one field event, and one relay.

Parents: Please contact Aleah at AleahMickelson at msn.com or myself (Erik Mickelson) through Facebook letting us know how you can help in the meet.  We will need:

  1. Nine to help with timing
  2. Two with registration
  3. Two for long jump
  4. Two for high jump
  5. One for shot put
  6. One to run the PA system

I know it is early but I have had several people already ask about the Junior Olympic Meet in Spokane June 20th.  Here is the schedule so you can plan accordingly.  It is a rolling schedule which means the meet starts at 10am and each individual event follows the previous event.  You will need to check into your even 30-45 minutes before your event starts.  If you or your child is planning on running at Regionals in Portland, he/she must place in the top-8 of their event at this meet.  If we have any 11 and older kids who want to run the 3000 meters (slightly less than two miles) this is the night before on Friday night).

400 Meters Into The Season

400 meters of the way into the track season (pun intended) First and foremost, we want to wish all mom’s out there a very happy Mother’s Day.  There would be no Sun City Track and Field if it wasn’t for all the hard work of the mom’s out there. I want to congratulate all of the kids on finishing the first two weeks of track season. It is always difficult to start a new sport. Some of our highlights so far:

  1. Watching the kids the first two weeks do drills have been remarkable. Their form and muscle mechanics is already getting significantly better. This is a vital component of running and the better one’s form the less of a chance of injury and faster he/she will run!
  2. Andy and Marie have done a remarkable job coaching our field events! It is one thing for the rest of us to coach sprints and distances but they have literally been building from the ground up. Andy built Sun City’s first hurdles and Marie brought a special bungee cord for kids to high jump over. Parent’s when you see the two of them; give them a huge “thank you”!
  3. We’ve had amazing weather. Track takes place no matter the weather (except for thunder and lightning) but it is still a whole lot nicer when we have 70’s.

In the next few weeks we are going to really start gearing up for our home track and field meet June 6th at West Valley High School in three weeks. Each athlete is allowed to compete in up to three events at the track meet. * Start thinking of which events you will want your child to compete in.  I would recommend one field event, one running event, and one relay but you can juggle this if you wish and we will talk more about this as the meet gets closer.  We will also need about twenty parents to volunteer on race day so please plan on volunteering.  We will need parents to: time, check-in, run concessions, etc. The track meet on the 6th will also be open to the entire community as well. So if your child has a friend that would like to run please pass the word around.  For non-Sun City athletes the cost will be $5/event. Last, it is not too late to join Sun City.  Especially for those athletes wanting to go on to competing in the Junior Olympics in the summer, there is a lot of track left to be run.  So let everyone know they can still come.  Anyone is allowed to come to one practice and just “check” things out.  After this, registration is $50 for the season which includes a competition shirt. I’ll be in San Diego this week for a conference so the workout have been written for the coaches. Parents, please consider running with your kids.  The more kids we have running the easier it makes it on the coaches. Coaches Erik and Aleah

Monday practices is at Franklin Middle School from 6-7pm

Wednesday practice is at West Valley High School from 6-7pm

Saturday morning distance practice is at the lower parking lot of Cowiche Canyon at 9am

June 6th–Home Track Meet at West Valley High School, Yakima

June 19th and 20th — Junior Olympic Association Championships in Spokane, WA

Weekend of July 11th — Junior Olympic Regionals (must qualify from the Association meet in Spokane the weekend of the 19th and 20th to move on)

*(It was brought to my attention that an athlete must be born in 2004 or later if he/she is going to do hurdles in a track meet.  These are USATF rules that we have to adhere to.  We are going to let those born 2005 and before practice hurdles but our insurance wont allow it in meets) ** Here is the link to the 2015 Sun City Track and Field Club–Info Packet and Waiver-and-release-form-2015 if you would like to register still.

Practice Selfie yesterday at Cowiche Canyon. Saturdays are an optional 40 minute run (out and back) for the distance runners. We have had two amazing weather days so far. Hope to see you there this next Saturday!
