Welcome to the postseason Sun City Track and Field.

Congratulations on making it to summer!  Everyone should be out of school and into the summer.  Vacations should be planned, and we made it through the main part of track season.  As the head coach, I’m totally biased but think our first season was a huge success.  Several highlights:

  • Kids competed well.
  • They learned new events.
  • They supported their teammates.
  • They were willing to try new events (high jump, hurdles, distance, sprints, shot put, etc.).
Kate was one of the 16 athletes running in the meet. Here she ran in the 200 meter dash.

We have officially transitioned to the postseason. Our first postseason meet was a huge success this last Saturday June 20th in Spokane at Central Valley High School.  It is the Junior Olympic USATF (United States of America Track and Field) Association Finals Meet and all 16 athletes who competed qualified for the Regional Meet the weekend of July 11th and 12th in Portland, Oregon.  We need to know by Wednesday July 3rd at the latest if your child is competing.  Any athlete who finishes in the top three in the Regional meet will move on to the national meet in Jacksonville, Florida.  Coach Aleah and I are planning on holding practices through July 8th since our three daughters are planning on running through the USATF Regional Meet.

For the last three weeks of practice, we will only be doing sprints but we will be overseeing the distance workouts for Henry, Brayden, and Hayden.  We will also have hurdles out for our few hurdlers on Wednesdays who will be running in Portland. Anyone is still welcome to show up but we will really be focusing on the kids getting them ready for competition.

For those looking for other activities this summer:

  1. Yakima Youth Track is having their all-comers track meets the next two Wednesdays at Kumler Field. Cost is $5 per child.
  2. Yakima HC Runners has their annual summer cross-country series at Franklin Park. Each race is only two miles long and the race dates are: June 24, July 8, July 22, August 5 & August 19. Cost is $5 per race and you register at Franklin Park each race day-of in the Rotary Pavilion at 6:30 for a 7pm start.
  3. Already looking ahead to the fall, we plan on the third season of cross-country. Tentative start date will be September 15th. We’ll be practicing Tuesday and Thursdays at both Franklin Park and Kissle Park (Franklin on Tuesdays and Kissle on Thursdays). More about this on future blogs in August!

***An earlier version of this blog had the first date of XC practice on September 22nd.  We plan on starting XC practice three weeks before Sunfair.  Last year it was on October 4th so this date is still somewhat in flux.***

A few notes about the meet, we didn’t have enough for any relay teams unfortunately.  It is a rolling start just like our home meet.  What this means is you need to listen to the starter, once an event is over the next event starts. DO NOT LEAVE THE TRACK for long extended periods of time unless you know there are a lot of events in-between.  If you do leave and have another event, make sure you have a buddy who is keeping you in the loop via sms on how fast the meet is progressing.

I have heard there is no shade at the track, I will be going down to Costco tomorrow to see if I can buy a sun shade for the team but even then this will only be for the athletes and not the parents.

Some families are going over the night before.  The Mickelsons are heading over that morning to save a little money.  We are leaving Yakima at 5am if that gives you a general idea of time but we don’t have any kids in the hurdles or relays and our daughters are in the 400 meters which is the third event.  MapQuest says it should be a 3 hr, 32 minute drive from Yakima but we like our Starbucks and there will be a stop or two in there.

If you have any questions about the meet give me a call or text at 941-5191.

Cheers, Coach Erik

Track Practice Tonight

We are very aware it is going to be over 100+ degrees at practice tonight. We will still be having practice but a few thoughts: if you want to stay home, that’s totally okay. We will be having a lighter workout tonight doing more form drills in the shade. Popsicle’s may even come out mid-practice. Aleah and I have one other idea we are working on as well. Either way, bring lots of water if you are coming tonight. See you at 6pm at Franklin Track.

Here are the  results for the 2015 Sun City Track Meet hosted at West Valley High School

There was no wind and temperatures started at 80 degrees at 9am and rose to 90 by noon when the meet finished.  A huge thank-you to the West Valley School District who has been more than accommodating to our team this season.

If you plan on running in the Association meet in Spokane June 20th you will need to sign your child up no later than this Wednesday at 9pm.  The website to sign up is at:

Once you sign up, you will also need to send up copy of your child’s birth certificate (photo of it is okay).  Contact Aleah at aleahmickelson@msn.com or 509-833-5952 if you need any help in doing this.  She is really good in walking parent through this process.  Do not wait until the last second.

Great job on today’s meet!  We’ll try to get meet results up later this weekend.

A few ramblings about tomorrow:

The most important thing about track meets is to have fun. Encourage everyone! There may be a few tears, in every race someone will finish both first and last.  Cheer everyone on and props to each and every person who makes it to the track (or field) tomorrow!

Second, it is going to be hot tomorrow!  Predictions are for 99 degrees. Bring water, sunscreen, and umbrellas.  We will run a fast meet but be aware of your child’s exposure to sun.  If they are getting too hot or tired, do not feel bad about pulling them. Good news is the meet starts early and we will be long gone before it gets too hot.

If your child wants to change or add events, this is okay but make sure you do so at least thirty minutes before the event goes off.  Aleah and Megan will be running the registration table on the west end of the track and can accommodate these needs.  Also, if you have friends or other non-Sun City members who want to run this is great!  Just have them sign up at least fifteen minutes before the event goes off.

First field event goes off tomorrow at 9am and first running event goes off at 10am.  It will be a rolling schedule which means as soon as one event is over, the next one will follow up.  We will also combine certain events (such as the boys 800 meters) with multiple age groups so we don’t have a four-hour track meet. We will split out results though.

If you have any last minute concerns, don’t hesitate to text or call me at 941-5191.

Looking forward to tomorrow.

Coach Erik
