400 meters of the way into the track season (pun intended) First and foremost, we want to wish all mom’s out there a very happy Mother’s Day. There would be no Sun City Track and Field if it wasn’t for all the hard work of the mom’s out there. I want to congratulate all of the kids on finishing the first two weeks of track season. It is always difficult to start a new sport. Some of our highlights so far:
- Watching the kids the first two weeks do drills have been remarkable. Their form and muscle mechanics is already getting significantly better. This is a vital component of running and the better one’s form the less of a chance of injury and faster he/she will run!
- Andy and Marie have done a remarkable job coaching our field events! It is one thing for the rest of us to coach sprints and distances but they have literally been building from the ground up. Andy built Sun City’s first hurdles and Marie brought a special bungee cord for kids to high jump over. Parent’s when you see the two of them; give them a huge “thank you”!
- We’ve had amazing weather. Track takes place no matter the weather (except for thunder and lightning) but it is still a whole lot nicer when we have 70’s.
In the next few weeks we are going to really start gearing up for our home track and field meet June 6th at West Valley High School in three weeks. Each athlete is allowed to compete in up to three events at the track meet. * Start thinking of which events you will want your child to compete in. I would recommend one field event, one running event, and one relay but you can juggle this if you wish and we will talk more about this as the meet gets closer. We will also need about twenty parents to volunteer on race day so please plan on volunteering. We will need parents to: time, check-in, run concessions, etc. The track meet on the 6th will also be open to the entire community as well. So if your child has a friend that would like to run please pass the word around. For non-Sun City athletes the cost will be $5/event. Last, it is not too late to join Sun City. Especially for those athletes wanting to go on to competing in the Junior Olympics in the summer, there is a lot of track left to be run. So let everyone know they can still come. Anyone is allowed to come to one practice and just “check” things out. After this, registration is $50 for the season which includes a competition shirt. I’ll be in San Diego this week for a conference so the workout have been written for the coaches. Parents, please consider running with your kids. The more kids we have running the easier it makes it on the coaches. Coaches Erik and Aleah

June 6th–Home Track Meet at West Valley High School, Yakima
June 19th and 20th — Junior Olympic Association Championships in Spokane, WA
Weekend of July 11th — Junior Olympic Regionals (must qualify from the Association meet in Spokane the weekend of the 19th and 20th to move on)
*(It was brought to my attention that an athlete must be born in 2004 or later if he/she is going to do hurdles in a track meet. These are USATF rules that we have to adhere to. We are going to let those born 2005 and before practice hurdles but our insurance wont allow it in meets) ** Here is the link to the 2015 Sun City Track and Field Club–Info Packet and Waiver-and-release-form-2015 if you would like to register still.
