Sun City's History

I am still running after 36 years, so I know the highs and lows of cross-country. I believe every family should have a sport that reinforces what they want to instill in their kids to eventually lead them to be amazing, healthy, and happy adults.

My wife Aleah (formerly Thome) and I started Sun City because there was not a youth running club in Yakima. I ran for the Cascade Striders as a child in Bellevue and Aleah ran for the old West Vally Ramblers in Yakima. After each of us won two high school state titles we didn't live up to our big scholarships at the Universities of Nebraska and Portland respective, we transferred into the University of Washington to run in 1997. Nine months later we were engaged. We have never know a life without running.

Sun City has consistent, demonstrable success not only in the number of All-Americans and National Qualifiers, but helping kids enjoy the sport of running. At the end of the day it isn't about the medals (though they are pretty cool), it is all about fun, relationships, and helping others through the sport of running.

Cheers, Coach Erik
